The paths to success are sometimes capricious. Or simply undetectable. In the summer of 2019, Alexander Morgan Stephens released ‘Mrs Magic’, one of his first singles under the alias Strawberry Guy, the solo project he had launched following a time as keyboardist for The Orielles. It actually made perfect sense for such a song—ethereal, carefree and dreamy—to be released in the summer, but nobody seemed to take much notice of it until a couple of years had passed. Half by a stroke of luck, half by poetic justice, Mrs Magic went viral and officially became a lo-fi pop hit on TikTok, curiously coinciding with the release of Sun Outside My Window, his first and only album to date.
Five years later, with Mrs Magic still providing the soundtrack to new summers for strangers who continue to discover it all over the world, Strawberry Guy has released ‘I’ll Never Feel That You Again’, his new single, which draws parallels with Tobias Jesso Jr. and Harry Nilsson. In his own words “A song of hope written for a less mature version of who I am today”.
